This Summer it’s all about Films Al Fresco, as The Luna Cinema marks its 10th anniversary with an incredible line up of films taking to the big screen in the country’s most iconic venues.
Cementing its place as the country’s leading producer of open air film screenings, The Luna Cinema is pleased to announce its new summer calendar, packed with more screenings than ever before from new blockbusters and this year’s award winners to nostalgic cult classics.
From April to October, film fans can choose from over 175 outdoor screenings taking place right across the UK. Venues include some of the most prestigious and historically important sites in the country, from Royal Palaces, such as Hampton Court and Kensington Palace, to castles and manor houses, such as Warwick Castle, Chatsworth House, Westminster Abbey, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Leeds Castle, Kenwood House, Lulworth Castle and Harewood House, to name a few.
New venues joining the Luna season this year include York Minster, Guildford Cathedral, Belvoir Castle, Royal Windsor Racecourse, Danson House, Bolton Abbey, Osterley House and Peckham Rye in London.
Audiences this summer are to be treated to a fantastic choice of films, including this year’s big award winners, such as Guillermo del Toro’s masterpiece, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Dunkirk. Fans will also have the opportunity to watch Darkest Hour, starring Gary Oldman in his Oscar-winning performance as Sir Winston Churchill in the grounds of Churchill’s birthplace, Blenheim Palace.
For those looking to exercise their vocal chords at an iconic venue, there is a screening of musical phenomenon The Greatest Showman at Knebworth House – a venue famous for its rock concerts. The programme also includes ever-popular classic that audiences enjoy year after year, such as Dirty Dancing, Casablanca, Mean Girls, Pretty Woman, The Goonies and Harry Potter – and those who are brave enough can even enjoy Jaws while sitting in a dinghy at Brockwell Lido.
George Wood, founder of The Luna Cinema, said:
We are really excited to be celebrating our 10th anniversary with our biggest season of open air cinema to date – it certainly feels as if the line up of films and venues for the coming season is our strongest ever.
We know that our regular audiences look forward to the day our programme is released as it heralds the prospect of warmer, lighter summer evenings where they can come and experience a classic film on the big screen against a jaw-dropping backdrop.
This year’s new releases are perhaps the strongest of any of the past ten years and we’re all excited to see films such as The Greatest Showman, Dunkirk, Shape of Water and Darkest Hour on a big screen under the stars.
Other season highlights include screenings of Top Gun at the RAF Museum in Hendon, Victoria & Abdul at Kensington Palace (where Queen Victoria was born), Star Wars: The Last Jedi at Warwick Castle, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri at Alexandra Palace and Four Weddings and a Funeral at Westminster Abbey. And by popular demand, there will even be a screening of Spice World at Regent’s Park!
Further cementing its position as the leaders in outdoor cinema experiences, The Luna Cinema team are pleased to announce the launch of two new brands in 2018; Luna Kids, the country’s first open air cinema designed specifically for families and children of all ages, and Luna Beach, a month long cinema residency on Brighton Beach, where the highest definition outdoor LED screen in the UK will present a full programme of film screenings as well as sports fixtures, including Wimbledon and the FIFA World Cup.
As always, The Luna Cinema audiences are welcome to bring along picnics to screenings. However, all events will have fantastic hot food for sale and a full bar on site, in partnership with headline bar sponsors, Estrella Damm. The official wine partner for the 2018 season will be Casillero del Diablo, the wine from the Devil’s cellar. Premium tickets are available at all screenings, which include a branded director’s chair in prime position in the arena, fast track access and a complimentary drink at the Luna Bar.
